Crombies win Herald and Post Restaurant of the Year 2002
Crombies is proud to be announced the winner of the Herald and Post Restaurant of the Year 2002.
After beating off stiff competition, the prize was awarded for our traditional quality meals
and great value for money.
The Judge of the competition wrote:
If I have to choose a winner, it's got to be Crombies as the place to find the very best
old English cooking which is so rare these days.
I thought the art had died out, but no. It's alive and well and going down great in Darlo.
I had a perfect plaice in lemon and parsley butter and the lightest apricot sponge
pudding with custard. All for around £6.20. The place was immaculately clean, full of
50's charm (it's been around over 60 years) and the chatty waitresses wore frilly aprons and hats!
It was full of young families, dads with teenage kids, grannies with grandchildren,
elderly and middle aged couples and the odd single person like me who was made to feel
very comfortable. A favourite with the theatre set from the Civic who cannot believe the
value for money.
This is the place to take your mates to listen to the chatter between waitresses and customers
who have become pals over the years, foreign visitors for the best of our cooking and my mum
whose eyes would twinkle at the taste. Great place.
